We’re getting all warm and fuzzy for May with upstanding family values at the Grindhouse Cinema Double Feature at The Media Club. The evening of May 7th (8pm sharp!) will feature two twisted family tales from the era of the drive-in theatre. Once again, drink specials all night from the friendly staff at The Media Club, and music from DJ Coleo after the films. Our first is an ultra-rare comedy-shocker from 1971 starring Abe Zwick, Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things.
This is a kooky horror/crime film with black humour abound that looks like a 70’s sitcom gone to hell! A pair of jewel thieves, Stanley and Paul, hide out from the law down in Miami. They decide the best way to lay low is for Paul to dress as a woman and pretend to be Stanley’s “Aunt Martha”! Well, Aunt Martha knocks off anyone who gets too close to their secret (or to the coke-snorting Stanley). Paul’s violent tendencies continue to spin out of control, and soon nobody who comes near is safe from him.
Our second film is Troma‘s first ever motion picture, and an ode to moms everywhere. Charlie Kaufman‘s classic Mother’s Day is the Citizen Kane of revenge films, equal measures suspense/horror and hilarious comedy. This is a personal favourite and we’re excited to be showing it just in time for Mother’s Day!
When you go into the woods today, you’re in for a big surprise. When you go into the woods today you’re not going to believe your eyes. But it ain’t no “teddy bear picnic”. Three girls discover that two men are willing to do anything to impress Mother and what impresses Mother is watching her son commit acts of rape and murder. Now these women are prisoners and lowered to pawns in the game of checkers between two dim wits and their Maniac Mommy and the question becomes, can any of them escape, alive?
Remember to mark Monday May 7th at 8pm on your calendars for our special family edition of Grindhouse at The Media Club. As always, there will be drink specials, great music and DVD giveaways from Videomatica!
